The moment I realised I could experience
The moment I realised I could experience everything I love about business-class flights for a fraction of the price – and travel more sustainably in the process – I was converted to train travel for life. The VIA Rail Montreal to Halifax train (the Ocean line) is the oldest continuously operating passenger train in North America, having transported people between Halifax and Montreal for more than 100 years.

When you go to the gardens
"When you go to the gardens, you're cycling... and you get to know more of the story of Louis XIV, XV and XVI," Mara Alfaro Prias, a Paris-based tour guide, told me over the phone. "It's not just what was behind the paintings or the chandeliers."

There are many theories about
There are many theories about the first people to settle here. "One is that it was a soldier who deserted from the Swedish army," said Heidi Kvamsdal, a photographer, local historian and Eidfjord native. "Another theory is that the first ones tried to escape from the Black Death [in the 14th Century]". In its aftermath, said Kvamsdal, people abandoned Kjeåsen for more than 150 years. But "we know that there has been permanent settlement there since early 16th Century."

Canvey Wick though
Canvey Wick, though, remained untouched until 1970, when Occidental Petroleum controversially secured permission to build a six-million-tonne oil refinery, storage depot and deep-water jetty on the site. The US firm ploughed £55m into Canvey Wick, covering it with a 2-3m layer of silt, sand, gravel and shell fragments dredged from the River Thames to help prepare for the development.

Luckily I was in the market
Luckily, I was in the market for a guide, and we agreed on the sum of 50 Fijian dollars (£18.60). Vagoni returned 10 minutes later with Saki Talemaivesi, his 16-year-old relative, and we set out up the service road.

Trailing plants and jungle vegetation
Trailing plants and jungle vegetation form as much of the outline as its concrete, which is pigmented to respond to the sun with shades that change over time. Minimising damage to the landscape, the building sits on a raised foundation supported by cross-shaped columns, its elevation allowing views over the jungle canopy to the sea.

Might the environmental conditions
Might the environmental conditions have been just right for giant Permian insects? "If we look at that wiggly graph of oxygen levels going up and down over time, corresponding almost exactly is the size of the largest insects around that time as well," says Cockerill. But atmospheric oxygen levels alone might not be the only reason for the difference in insect sizes. The abundance of small prey and absence of birds (who were yet to feature in the tree of life), might also have allowed invertebrates to flourish.

We stopped near the Gali Ali Bag
We stopped near the Gali Ali Bag waterfalls to admire a now-disused stretch of that original road: a half-tunnel carved into a sheer precipice. "My grandparents drove along here until it was diverted in the 1970s, terrified that the mountain would come down on them," said Hussein. "For a quarter-mile it was so narrow only one car could pass at a time. They'd honk their horns as a warning and pray for no oncoming traffic in case they all got stuck."

Standing back outside where
Standing back outside where we could talk, Lekube explained that the plant is a natural next step in Basque maritime history. It fits into a broader goal of the Basque government to make Basque Country a "polo de conocimiento" (a global knowledge hub) for marine renewable technology.

Sailors from Mutriku ventured
Sailors from Mutriku ventured as far as the Gulf of St Lawrence to hunt seals, whales and cod. The products they brought back fuelled leather industries in Mutriku and across Europe. Mutriku's whalers were such renowned experts that as early as the 13th Century, the Spanish crown demanded a whale from the town as an annual tribute.
