Worms in the digestive tract are a very common phenomenon. Although many of us are aware of them, we do not pay much attention to this problem and end up ignoring its symptoms. If at all, some deworming medicine is given to children.
Ayurveda informs us that worms are one of the major causes for many diseases in adults as well. Like a tree affected by termites is gradually eaten up from the inside, worms can affect the entire health of a person. Therefore, every person should understand the importance of regular deworming.
Ayurveda notes the reasons for worm infestation as follows. Some of these are very simple things that we do even without realizing, thereby unknowingly promoting worms.
Eating again in spite of indigestion. Generally, when earlier ingested food is not digested, one does not have a real appetite. In such a state, when the person gets tempted to eat again, this creates an atmosphere in the digestive system that is suitable for worms.
Eating sweets in excess, especially processed sweets, and excess sour and fermented foods.
Eating excess carbohydrates and jaggery.
Consuming excess liquids like cold aerated drinks or even drinking water when one is not thirsty.
Not practicing any exercises / Avoiding an exercise regime.
Sleeping during the day time, especially on a regular basis.
Eating Virruddha Anna i.e. means combining two food items that are not compatible with each other and therefore very difficult for the body to process.
Drinking water from plastic bottles, eating frozen foods, stored foods. Unhygienic eating habits, unhygienic personal care and frequent travelling can only add to these conditions.
Ayurveda mentions 3 main types of worms.
Kaphaj Krumi ( Worms due to Kapha imbalance) – These worms have their origin in the stomach and initial part of small intestine but can spread upwards or downwards. They are either flat and long or round and long or of a shape of a sprout or very small in size. Thery cause giddiness, frequent cold, sneezing etc.
Raktaj Krumi (worms originating in blood) – These type if worms are situated in the blood and can lead to various skin problems.

Yoga and pranayam have now become a part of many people’s lives and daily routines all over the world. The number of individuals earnestly practicing pranayam has increased by leaps and bounds in the last few years with promotions, like the introduction of International Yoga Day by our Hon. PM Modi ji. However, it is interesting to note that most people may not know what ‘praan’ actually is! Praan is ‘life force’, in Yoga and the ancient sciences.
To explain praan, many books on Yoga use the simile that pranic energy is a bird and the body is a cage, in which this bird is trapped. When a cage is left open, one can see the bird escaping. However, to ‘see’ pranic energy when it leaves the body at the time of death is impossible. Scientists have tried to conduct experiments to ‘discover’ or ‘capture’ pranic energy. In one such famous experiment someone even tried to keep a person in a glass box at the time of death to try and ‘catch’ the praan that escapes, but without success.
Ayurveda says that this body-cage is equipped with not one gate for praan but nine gates – at the sense organs and orifices (two eyes, two nostrils, two ears, one mouth, the anus and the genitals) – and they are all usually open. In fact, many Yoga kriyas and meditation techniques are simply an attempt to keep these nine openings in discipline. In normal life, all the senses from these nine openings are constantly attracted and running outwards, towards the world of objects. Even though these nine doorways of the body-cage are constantly open outward, the bird called praan doesn’t escape. This can be explained by the science of self-realization, but the long and short of it is the amazing fact that praan remains in the human body by its own wish. Praan remains in the in the body, carrying a specific concept and program and manifests in the form of life activities. Praanic energy is omnipresent. It is present in the atmosphere. When the five elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space), which are the material basis of everything, including all living beings, come together (in a body) in a suitable condition of space and time, praan enters to make life possible. In the living body praan spreads to every cell via the medium of air and thus the movement of the breath, with each inhalation and exhalation, is an indication of the existence of pranic energy.

As the name suggests, lemongrass is a kind of grass and therefore very easy to grow. It is native to South Asia, South East Asia, Australia and is widely used throughout India. It is also very popular for aromatic uses. Lemongrass oil is extracted from the stalk and leaves and is well-known for its antibacterial properties.
Lemongrass is most effective when used fresh, but can be also used in a dry form. In India, fresh lemongrass is generally available in many vegetable markets or else grown in small pots or directly on earth in small patches. Lemongrass grows in a bunch and the blades need to be handled with care because of their sharp edges.
Lemongrass is very effective in cases of cold, cough, throat infection and also fever.
THROAT PAIN
A steaming hot lemongrass and ginger tea, taken sip-by-sip can offer instant relief in throat pain.
STUFFED NOSE AND COUGH
Steam inhalation of lemongrass infused hot water gives relief in cases of a stuffy nose, common cold and helps expel the accumulated cough. Lemongrass essential oil is also useful here. Add drops of essential oil to the hot water and take a steam bath in a steam box or sauna, for relief.
JOINT PAIN
Troublesome knee joints becoming painful is a common ailment, especially in the monsoon. Massaging the knees with a cotton cloth ‘potli’ (handheld bag) filled with the hot pulp of lemongrass leaves offers great benefits. A gentle massage of painful knees with lemongrass oil will also provide relief.
This multi-useful home remedy should be readily available in your kitchen or garden. It grows easily in pots or land. When in abundance, lemongrass can be dried in shade and once dry, stored in airtight jars for future use. Avoid drying it in direct sunlight as this might cause lemongrass to lose its potency.

This kriya straightens and laterally realigns the spine. It stimulates the body’s magnetic field and activates the right side of the body. The beating of the heart affects the left side of the body more than the right. To compensate for this activity, the Balancing kriya is done only on the right side of the body. An additional benefit during this kriya is taking the breath through the left nostril. Breathing through the left nostril activates the right hemisphere of the brain, which helps to balance the personality emotionally and intellectually. The Balancing kriya should be performed a maximum of 5 times.
Stand erect with the feet at a slight distance from each other. The arms should be kept straight and touching the sides of the body, with the hands closed in fists, the thumbs pointing downwards.
Block the right nostril by closing it from underneath with the right thumb, without exerting pressure onto it. Inhale fully through the left nostril.
Hold the breath and lift the right knee so that the thigh is parallel to the ground. Bring the right fist to the right shoulder.

One part of the definition of health in Ayurveda is the phrase ‘prasanna-atma-indriya-mana’. i.e. your soul, all your senses, and your mind, must remain in a cheerful state. The body is automatically included when we refer to the senses. These senses are touch, sight, hearing, smell and taste. Any sensory function or input is only possible when these senses work through, and as part of, the whole body. They are a medium of communication with the outside world. The mind, of course, is the program that provides the possibility of connection between the body and the atma (inner self or soul). You can think about it like a manager between the soul and the senses. The mind is expected to work for the soul to become prasann (cheerful and satisfied), but in a way that is in harmony with the senses and the body.
To remain in a state of Ananda or Bliss is the innate nature of the universal program or consciousness. The entire creation around us is a reflection of that Program. Thus, all of Creation as a whole, and each created entity, naturally wish to always remain in a state of bliss. Thus, to attain and sustain such a state of cheerfulness or contentment for this entity, consisting of body-mind-soul, is very much in harmony with the Universal Program.
This is the intention behind the design and practice of the cultural events and festivals of the rich and ancient Indian tradition. The purpose is to bring joy and contentment to the individual as well as to Janata Janardan i.e. the global family of human beings. The bliss that is expected from following such cultural practices does not have any degrees or superlatives, or any comparisons. It refers to pure joy that has no opposite.
One of the most loved and always trending festivals in Maharashtra is Ganesha Utsav (Festival of the God Ganesha). The entire state of Maharashtra and many other surrounding areas are filled with a vibrant energy during the 11 day long festival. In every city street we find displays of the statue of Ganesha, richly decorated and adorned, with every group or mandal showcasing their own style of representing and honouring Shri Ganesha.

SOM Program Workshops
Thomas Trinter continues his offering of the SOM Program Workshop in various spaces. On Sunday 8th October, he conducted another Workshop in Munich with a small but focused group and received some very good feedback.
As noted by Thomas, the participants came with different motivations. Some were looking for a method to relax physically, others to relax mentally. Then there were participants who were looking for an introduction to a regular meditation practice. For all these people, the SOM program is the right thing.
With 7 participants, the room was well filled. Some participants reported the positive energy they perceived. Feedback from participants was very positive. Some expressed that they are now using this workshop as an opportunity to begin or resume their own meditation and yoga practice.
Many thanks to Jeannette Tambe and the team of Calleris, in whose premises the workshop took place.

The word Deepavali consists of two words, Deep means lamp or flame and Avali means a line of lamps. Therefore Deepavali is a festival of light, the festival of flame. Deepavali, being one of the most important festivals celebrated throughout the India, has many norms or customs as in how to celebrate it. But if we try to list them, the first two would be to light lots of lamps and to eat Deepavali special food. Indian culture has always found a connection between nature, atmosphere and the person and has designed all the festivals in such way that it helps to maintain a balance between all and Deepavali is not an exception to this.
According to Ayurveda, Deepavali comes in season when the Digestive fire has begun to again become strong after the rainy season. Lighting lots of lamps outside, helps definitely to ignite the digestive fire within as well. At the same time Ayurveda also recommends to consume right and sufficient food during this time of the year (beginning of winter and winter) as it will help to nourish all the 7 dhatus and boost the immunity.
Deepavali’s special food items like chakli, kadboli, anarsa, karanji etc. are part of time tested traditions and we can find their recipes in ancient Ayurvedic texts. Similarity observed in the recipes given then and practised today, is not only surprising but also helps us to understand the fact that all traditions have their roots deep down in the ancient science of health. Even today if we can follow traditions, they will help protect us and keep us healthy at all levels. Let’s take a look at some of the Deepavali festival foods that are explained in Ayurveda.
Deepavali and Chakli are inseparable from each other, the Sanskrit name for chakli is almost the same, ka-chakalli. Ka-chakalli is prepared from Black gram flour along with spices like hing (asafoetida), fresh ginger and rock salt. All the above ingredients are kneaded firmly with help of water. Once the dough is ready, it’s given a shape of a thick wick and rolled in a circular manner and deep fried in ghee.

A medium’ is always necessary for any energy to be expressed or a program to be communicated. For example, the sun may shine bright in space, but unless light travels in a medium and is reflected we may not be able to see it. Though we experience light everyday and night, light itself is a very mystique phenomenon that has intrigued scientists and physicists for hundreds of years. Deepawali is the festival of this mystic light, celebrated all over India. Bharatiya, the citizens of India, have since ancient times been worshippers of light. The outer light is only a reflection of the inner light. When the inner light shines brightly, then we will have celebrated Deepwali in the true sense.
Every living being has a program that can manifest with the help of the body, which is the basic tool or medium of expression. Beyond the physical body, there is the astral body, which is a much subtler medium for communication. The Gods or deities have an even purer medium of expression that is finer than both the physical and subtle bodies. Beyond that level, there is no body-medium of any kind, no particles, nothing, only the Pure Program. This is the stage that we call Nirvaan (enlightenment) because there is no necessity of expressing through any medium.
One cannot convey the experience of God using limited words of comparison and expression of the physical-level world. At the most, you can try to explain His existence through the effect on the physical body, just like a blind man can tell you that a lamp feels warm even though he is unable to see its light. The wish to experience God can be sought through the following easy ways.
