Finding the right kurta can be difficult—the fit is important for both comfort and beauty. As South Asian men, we understand the battle all too well. After putting on what feels like a million kurtas and being disappointed time and time again, I'm sharing my hard-earned skills on how to measure precisely and choose styles that will actually suit your body type.
The first step is understanding kurta sizes. Most brands offer sizes from small to XXL or even larger, but the actual measurements can vary significantly between designers. Always check the size chart to see the chest, waist, and length specs for each size. Pay close attention to the bust measurement listed, as this is the critical number that will determine if a kurta fits your torso or not.
Grab a gentle measuring tape and measure yourself. Wrap the tape across your chest, making sure it is parallel to the floor. Breathe regularly; you don't want to hold your breath and receive an erroneous reading. Make a note of the measurement in inches. Measure around your natural waistline, which is the narrowest section of your torso and is typically a few inches above your belly button. Again, write it down.
Now you can compare your measurements to the size charts. Look for the chest size that most closely matches your chest measurement. The waist size is less important for kurtas since they are typically loose and flowy, not form-fitting. If your chest lands right between two sizes, I'd recommend sizing up for a roomier fit. It's always better to have a kurta be a tad loose than tight in any way.
Next, consider the length of the kurta. Most brands offer short and long styles. The short kurta hits at or just below the waistline. Long kurtas for men fall right around knee-length or even longer. Take a moment to think about how you want the kurta to hit based on your height and body type. Long kurtas can make shorter men look even shorter, while tall lads can really pull off an extra-long kurta. I'm of average height, so I stick to long styles that hit right at my knees. Test different lengths in the mirror at home before committing.
Once you've got your size and length preferences down, it's time to try some options on. Here are a few fit tips when you're in the dressing room:
Raise your arms up high and bend side to side. The kurta shouldn't feel tight anywhere.
Sit down and see if the length rides up at all. It should still cover your backside comfortably when seated.
Check the sleeve length—they shouldn't be too short and expose your wrists. Long sleeves should cover half of your palm.
Ensure the neckline lays flat against your chest without any gaps.
Take a look in the three-way mirror to check for any odd pulling or bunching of fabric anywhere
Trust your gut—if a kurta just doesn't feel right, size up or keep looking for a better fit.
With practice, you'll learn what silhouettes suit your body best too. Some styles to consider are the basic straight-cut kurta for most body types. A fit and flare A-line kurta is very flattering for apple shapes. Men with broad shoulders can draw attention upward in a kurta with decorative elements on the shoulders. Experiment and have fun with different necklines, hemlines, and fabrics too.
Known with your measurements and fit knowledge, you'll be choosing perfectly tailored kurtas in no time. Just remember—comfort over everything. A kurta that feels great is the one you'll reach for time and time again. Always take the time to find your perfect fit. Your confidence will thank you for it!
