Melvor Idle strips away the images and 3D environments from RuneScape and similar MMOs and distills it down to a simple idle game that relies on menus that lets players control their inventory, their skills and quests. Engaging in combat with a winning streak earns players XP and loot that can then be invested in any level of skill tree or upgrade players want, and doing repetitive activities like crafting or cutting wood yields their own benefits with OSRS Gold.

Malcolm has played RuneScape since he was a kid, and has also dabbled in several of the most popular idle games, such as Clicker Heroes, Cookie Clicker and NGU Idle. Although he liked them but felt that the genre could have something more that would be pleasing in a similar manner to Jagex's top RPG.

"So I decided to challenge myself to design my own game, never really imagining it would actually be released, let alone become an instant hit," he tells GamesIndustry.biz. "I was trying to come up with something completely different from the existing idle game mold, something that was feature-rich and offered players a option in the way they would progress in their game instead of simply increasing numbers in a continuous cycle.

After thinking about this idea few minutes in a closed room I began to mesh concepts and gameplay mechanics from classic MMOs together with the popular idle game concept, creating something that could be enjoyed casually, on the go and easily fit into the busy lives of players."

Melvor adds: "While the numbers and statistics stuff isn't something that all players are most interested in when playing MMOs However, it's what people who are devoted fans tend to stick to after exploration is over. Because it's usually so important to what long-term players' minds are on it makes sense to integrate this feature as one of the main elements of Melvor's game's gameplay design. Furthermore, it blends perfectly with the design elements commonly found in most idle games."

Although he drew inspiration from other MMOs However, the structure and structure of RuneScape was one that he was particularly attentive to, laying out this world Melvor Idle to create a universe that was akin to the 20-year-old RPG. "RuneScape was a fundamental touchstone for the game because it was such an important gameplay for me" He explains."

As with many others I got into RuneScape because most of my friends at the time played it. Its being played via a browser is a large part of this, that very low entry barrier with RuneScape's scalar depth and complexity were the reason that kept me playing it for so long and that's something I wanted to emulate with Melvor Idle."

With Malcolm being transparent about his ideas, word soon reached Jagex that fan-made game based upon its own MMO. An employee flagged the matter to management, who subsequently approved it, with manager of product development Chris Pfeiffer telling us his team was impressed by "how much had been achieved and how closely it was in line to RS Gold."
